Ethical Action and Service Learning Guidance

Guiding Principles:

CAS projects should go beyond participation and aim to create a positive and sustainable impact. Students are encouraged to design projects that respect the dignity of individuals and communities, consider environmental responsibility, and reflect global citizenship values. Ethical action requires asking not only “Can we do this?” but also “Should we do this, and how?”

Respect and Sensitivity: Projects must be grounded in cultural awareness, avoiding stereotypes or activities that exploit communities.

Sustainability: Activities should have lasting value rather than a short-term effect. Students should consider how the project can continue after their direct involvement.

Collaboration over Charity: Projects should aim to work with communities, not for them, ensuring the voices of those served are included in the planning.

Equity and Inclusion: Ensure access for diverse groups and avoid projects that privilege certain groups at the expense of others.

Health and Safety: All activities must prioritize the well-being of participants and recipients.

Reflection Questions for Students

How does my project respect the dignity and autonomy of those involved?

What long-term change might this project create?

Am I listening to the voices of the community, or imposing my own ideas?

How does this project connect to global issues such as sustainability, equity, or cultural preservation?

What would “success” look like for both me and the people/communities engaged?
