Essential Introduction to Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
What is CAS?
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a core component of the IB Diploma Programme designed to help students grow as well-rounded, reflective, and active members of their communities. It runs for 18 months alongside academic studies and is compulsory for earning the IB Diploma, although it is not graded like academic subjects.
CAS gives students opportunities to explore their interests, challenge themselves, and make a positive impact on others through real-world, experiential learning.

The Importance of CAS In The IBDP Diploma
Personal Growth
Develops self-confidence, resilience, and adaptability.
Global Citizenship
Encourages awareness and respect for different cultures, communities, and perspectives.
Lifelong Skills
Builds leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that extend beyond school.
Balance
Promotes a healthy lifestyle and a balanced approach to personal and academic life.
The Three Strands
CAS is built on the principle that the most powerful learning happens through experience. Students engage in real-life challenges that spark personal growth and meaningful change. Through critical reflection, these experiences are transformed into lasting lessons that shape thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This is where knowledge becomes action, and action becomes understanding.

CREATIVITY
Exploring and expressing ideas through the arts, design, or innovation (e.g., theatre productions, photography, coding, event planning).

ACTIVITY
Physical effort that contributes to a healthy lifestyle (e.g., sports, hiking, dance, yoga, outdoor expeditions).

SERVICE
Unpaid, voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student and a positive impact on the community (e.g., community gardening, tutoring, environmental campaigns).
Learning Outcomes
Every CAS experience must support at least one of the seven learning outcomes:
What Makes a Good CAS Experience?
Real, purposeful, and personally meaningful.
Involves thoughtful planning, action, and reflection.
Encourages personal challenge and growth.
Maintains a balance across creativity, activity, and service.

The CAS Journey
-

-
During: Record activities, reflect on learning, adjust plans if needed.
