The Artist Project
The Artist Project is a Higher Level (HL) only external assessment in which you develop, create, and realize a stand-alone artwork in a carefully chosen context. The project demonstrates your ability to investigate ideas, connect with other artists, respond to feedback, and create meaningful work that communicates with an audience.

Success Tips
✔ Develop a project that is meaningful to you.
✔ Choose a context that strengthens your artistic intentions.
✔ Support your ideas with research, visual evidence, and critical thinking.
✔ Make meaningful (not superficial) connections with other artists.
✔ Show how feedback and experimentation helped refine your project.
✔ Remember that your artwork should communicate with an audience, not simply exist as an object.
✔ Keep the balance between visuals and text; this is a visual arts assessment, so your images should do much of the communicating.
Assessment Criteria - The Artist Project
Criterion A: Proposal (8 marks)
Evidence: Curated visual and written evidence in the “Proposal” section of the project PDF
Assessment objectives: Investigate, Situate
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• the student’s intentions for the project as it is situated within the chosen context?
• an awareness of the chosen context demonstrated through investigation?
Criterion B: Connections (8 marks)
Evidence: Curated visual and written evidence in the “Connections” section of the project PDF
Assessment objectives: Investigate, Situate
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• the connections between the student’s project and at least two artworks by different artists?
• investigation and understanding of the cultural significance of at least two artworks by other artists to
inform the project?
Evidence: Curated visual and written evidence in the “Dialogues” section of the project PDF
Assessment objective: Refine
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• the student’s responses to critical dialogues to refine their project for context and audience(s)?
Criterion C: Dialogues (6 marks)
Criterion D: Curation and realization in context (10 marks)
Evidence: A video documenting the realization of the resolved project artwork and details of the artwork.
Also a short text (100 words maximum) outlining the refined artistic intentions.
Assessment objectives: Synthesize, Curate, Situate
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• the realization of the student’s finalized intentions through synthesis of concept and form to
communicate with a real or potential audience(s) in the chosen context?
Criterion E: Post-production evaluation (4 marks)
Evidence: Curated visual and written evidence in the “Post-production evaluation” section of the project
Assessment objective: Situate
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• the student’s evaluation of how successful the realization of the project was in situating it within the chosen context and communicating with a real or potential audience(s)?
Criterion F: Future development (4 marks)
Evidence: Curated visual and written evidence in the “Future development” section of the project PDF
Assessment objective: Situate
Key Question:
To what level do the submitted visual and written materials evidence:
• new directions and ideas informed by the evaluation of the project?
